Periodontology – Periodontitis: Prevention is painless
The correct dental term for inflammation of the periodontium is periodontitis. Periodontal disease refers to the same condition and has become established in common parlance.
Periodontal disease, or periodontitis, describes inflammation of the periodontium and usually begins with gingivitis.
If left untreated, it spreads to the surrounding connective tissue and the jawbone. This inflammation can go unnoticed for several years because it spreads painlessly.
Only when it is very advanced does it cause severe pain.
The gums and the fibers between the tooth root and the jawbone, which anchor the tooth firmly in the bone, loosen, and pockets form that provide a breeding ground for bacteria, which spread further and worsen the inflammation.
The pockets gradually become deeper, while at the same time the gums recede. This leads to the breakdown of the tissue and bone.
Eventually, the tooth loses its support and begins to loosen.
